A single-vehicle collision of a tanker truck on the morning of January 27, 2001 on Highway 20 near Toledo, Oregon resulted in a spill of nearly 6,000 gallons of heavy fuel into the Yaquina River. Details of the environmental effect are currently being assessed. Four booms were established in the river in an effort to contain the fuel. Currently, no product was sighted past the fourth boom, established about one mile north of Elk City. Several state and federal agencies responded to the spill. Lead federal and state agencies are the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. The responsible party, Blue Line Transportation is also on scene cooperating in the response, and is a member of the Incident Command. Supporting state agencies include Oregon Departments of Transportation, Fish and Wildlife, and Agriculture. Federal agencies include U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Portland, National Marine Fisheries and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agencies. CASE CLOSED.
