On 5 July, the tug PENN No. 6 holed its tank barge PENN No. 460 while maneuvering in the Narragansett Bay. Approximately 14,000 gallons of #6 fuel oil was spilled from a rupture in the number 1 starboard tank of the barge, which contained a total of 10.5 million gallons. The initial report estimated a release at approximately 9,000 gallons of oil. Crewmembers were able to transfer fuel from the tank in order to stop the release and avoid further pollution. The exterior of the tug and barge was cleaned and the hole in the barge was closed with a temporary patch. Drug and alcohol testing of the crew was completed. Air Station Cape Cod conducted an over-flight of the area with Congressman Kennedy and the FOSC. The helicopter over-flights confirmed the location of the oil. The area affected by the oil is the shoreline east of the barge, north of Coddington Cove to Carr Point Park.. MSO PROVIDENCE is working with Federal, State, and Local agencies to minimize damage to marine environment. MSO PROVIDENCE is monitoring cleaning operations. CASE CLOSED
