At 1005 a.m. on August 8, 2000, a significant oil spill was reported which spans a 25 mile stretch of the east coast of Florida from North Miami, FL, near Golden Beach, to Pompano, FL, near Pompano Beach. The source of the oil spill is unknown and is currently under investigation. Coast Guard over flights sighted numerous areas of pancaked, emulsified oil, light oil sheen, and black oil along the shore. Several beaches have been impacted by tarballs ranging from 1/4 inch to pancake size. Hollywood Beach, Ft. Lauderdale Beach, and John Lloyd State Park were all closed pending cleanup.
