On the afternoon of February 11th the M/V TAKO SPIRIT's barge struck the anchored M/V MILLENIUM EXPRESS at Zito's fleet, mile marker 105, on the Lower Mississippi River. The M/V MILLENIUM EXPRESS sustained a 1 foot by 3 inch hole on the vessel''s aft portion of the port side. An estimated 17,000 gallons of diesel fuel was released. The majority of the product gathered along the left descending bank around the Carrolton Bend area and at the Zito Barge fleet. No water intakes were affected. Contractors responded using drum skimmers and vacuum trucks. Additional containment boom was deployed as a precautionary measure. The impact to wild life included 10 oiled birds (3 dead) and 1 oiled turtle. CASE CLOSED.
