On the afternoon of February 11, the M/V TAKO SPIRIT's barge struck the anchored M/V MILLENIUM EXPRESS at Zito Fleet, MM 105, on the Lower Mississippi River. The M/V MILLENIUM EXPRESS sustained a 1-foot by 3-inch hole on the vessel''s aft portion of the port side. An estimated 17,000 gallons of diesel fuel was released into the Mississippi River before the source was secured. The majority of the product has gathered along the left descending bank around the Carrolton Bend area and at Zito Barge Fleet. No water intakes are affected and no wildlife impact has been reported. Cleanup contractors have been hired and a first light site assessment will be conducted on February 12. MSO New Orleans is monitoring the situation and conducting a marine casualty investigation.
