At 1620 on 27 Jan 2000, The NRC received a report from Marathon Ashland Pipeline about a release of crude oil from their 24-inch pipeline near Winchester, KY. At the time of the report, the amount of the release and the cause were unknown. On 28 January EPA IV contacted the NRC to report that the amount of the release was between 500,000 and 800,000 gallons, and the cause was due to a failure of the pipeline. EPA IV is FOSC. All oil is contained in Two mile Creek, which is approximately three miles from the Kentucky River. The oil is not expected to make it to the river. Clean up is in progress with approximately 2,000 bbls of oil/water mixture recovered to date. CASE PENDS
