On 28 April, The Kaneohe Marine Corp Base reported a 200 gallon JP5 fuel spill due to overfilling of a pump truck. Within an hour, the estimated discharge increased to 6,000 gallons. Further investigations revealed that up to 12,000 gallons may have been discharged. The JP5 overflowed the containment area and entered a nearby storm drain that runs 2500 feet to the outfall in Kaneohe Bay. An estimated 500 gallons entered the water while the rest of the product remained trapped in storm drain piping. Vacuum trucks and absorbent booms are being used to recover the spill.
