Description:

On October 30, 2001 the National Response Center received a report from the North Carolina State Emergency Management Agency of an overturned tractor trailer which was releasing material. The tractor trailer overturned on highway 421 spilling approximately 2500 gallons of diesel and 6400 gallons of gasoline. The material ignited burning off most of the fuel. The fire department reported that the fire was prohibiting the clean up of the material. Highway 421 was closed in all directions for 1.5 hours. The highway remains closed northbound. EPA IV is the FOSC. Update: 05 November 2001; highway 421 has been reopened, and local emergency response was able to place boom ahead of the material in the creek. No other threat to the environment is reported.
