On September 12, 2001 at approximately 2200 local time, the towing vessel MS PAULA struck a metal dredge suction hose and sank in 10 feet of water, in the Apalachicola River, near Wewahitchka, Fl. Although the vessel was carrying 3000 gallons of number 2 diesel fuel, it did not sustain damage near the fuel tanks. Containment boom and absorbent pads have been used to combat the sheen. Three rows of deflection boom and a secondary containment boom have been deployed down-stream by the responsible party's spill contractor. Efforts to raise the vessel have commenced and Marine Safety Office Mobile personnel will monitor the response. CASE CLOSED.
