Description: On November 20, 2001 the tank vessel ATIGAN PASS, under tow en route a scrap yard in China, broke tow and went adrift approximately 70 miles west of the Oregon Coast. The vessel has approximately 21,000 gallons of residual oil in its tanks. The towing vessel, the ocean tug DE DA, has respooled a new tow wire and will attempt connection to an emergency towing bridle this evening. Captain of the Port Portland issued an administrative order to obtain additional tug resources. Tugs SEA VICTORY, SEA VENTURE, and BARBARA FOSS are underway to provide assistance. Marine Safety Office (MSO) Portland is continuing to monitor the scene including planning for the possibility of a shore-based response. Update: November 26, 2001; the original towing bridal has been reattached and the vessel is being towed to China. CASE CLOSED. |
