On Thursday, March 25, 1999 a Chevron Refinery hydro-cracking unit released an unknown amount of refined hydrocarbons due to a large fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Three firefighters were injured. An estimated 600 people went to three area hospitals complaining of nausea and/or a burning sensation in their throats. Local officials instituted a "shelter-in-place" order. A Chevron representative said there were toxins in the smoke. CASE CLOSED.
