At 0948, December 22, 1998, the National Response Center received a report of an overturned tractor trailer on Old Ridge Road, 1/2 mile east of I-95 near Ashland, Hanover County, VA. The trailer was carrying ten, 4400 pound tote bins containing sodium hydrosulfide. Sodium hydrosulfide is reactive with water and the accident appears to have caused reactions, small explosions, and a fire. Local radio station is broadcasting emergency notices advising local residents to stay inside their homes while the material continues to burn. Hanover County Fire officials are on-scene directing the response. EPA OSC is en route.
