On 06 December, 1998 a Montgomery Tank Lines Truck wrecked on I-24 near Saluda, NC. The truck was transporting nine 2 ton containers of sodum hydrosulfite. Several containers ruptured, releasing material onto the roadway and the adjacent embankment. The spilled material caught fire igniting the nearby woods. The fire was allowed to burn fo 24 hours as part of the response. Approximately 100 people were evacuated from the area. Six containers have been relocated to the County landfill. Two additional containers remain for disposal. The material will be neutralized at the landfill facility. One other container continues to react with moisture in the air creating toxic fumes. Responders will attempt to neutralize the material in this tote on scene by adding a large quantity of water. Run off water from this operation will be collected in a temporarily lined pit. CASE CLOSED.
