On December 4, 1998 the National Response Center received a report from Office of Emergency Remedial Response (OERR) that the Surrette American Battery facility in Northfield, NH caught fire resulting in the discharge of oil. In 1995 the EPA conducted a Removal Action to remove and dispose of abandoned drums, containers of sulfuric acid and other hazardous substances as well as excavate and dispose of lead contaminated soil. Early this morning an oily sheen was noticed in the Winnipesaukee River adjacent to the site. According to local fire officials the source of the sheen may be an 8,000 gallon capacity underground storage tank at the facility. The EPA response team is on scene. OERR will continue to monitor the situation. Please call Art Johnson at 703-603-8705 if you have any questions.
