SITUATION: On October 29,1998 USCG received a report of a grounding and explosion on the M/V Champion Trader at mile marker 2 on the Lower Mississippi River. The explosion was caused by hot work being done in the engineering space, and left one crewman dead and four more were taken to the hospital. The explosion also put a hole in the port fuel tank and caused the discharge of 3,704 Gallons of Heavy Fuel Oil. Response contractors were hired to clean up product and a safety zone was established between mile marker 1 and 3 on the Lower Mississippi River. MSO New Orleans and CGC Pamlico are on scene and the MSO will monitor the situation and clean up. CASE PENDS
