SITUATION: On October 1, 1998 USCG received a report from British Petroleum of a possible pipeline release in Mississippi Canyon Block 109. The pipeline lead into the South Pass 50 platform owned by Chevron. Chevron stated no product was received from the pipeline for two hours. MSO overflight spotted a sheen approximately 60 nautical miles by 20 nautical miles with heavy streaking in West Delta 143. The release originated from a crack in the 8" pipeline. Valves of the section of pipe have been secured. Dispersants have been used on the spill and an overflight was scheduled for the morning of October 2, 1998 to investigate the effectiveness of dispersants. Land impact possible, however the current is keeping the spill offshore. The Gulf Strike Team is enroute and the MSO will monitor the situation and cleanup. CASE PENDS
