INSUM #: | Sitrep Two |
Occurence Date: | 26 November 1997 |
Location: | Unalaska Island, AK |
Source: | M/V Kuroshima |
Material: | Bunker C Fuel |
Severity: | Medium/Potential Major - Probability Low |
Quantity Discharged: | 12,000 Gallons |
Quantity in Water: | 12,000 Gallons |
Body of Water Affected: | Summer Bay |
Federal On-Scene Coordinator: | MSO Anchorage |
SITUATION: The M/V Kuroshima remains hard aground port side to the shoreline in Summer Bay. The vessel appears to have settled into the sandy gravel bottom. The vessel has been anchored by cables to shore. The exact severity of damage is still not known but suspect 3C fuel oil tank is holed, with other tanks possibly damaged. Amount of oil spilled to date remains at 12,000 gallons. Assessments indicate varying amounts of shoreline impact with majority of oil ashore in southern Summer Bay and contained in Summer Lake. An estimated 2000 - 3000 gallons of oil is contained in Summer Lake by weir dam and boom. Oil removal via vacuum truck proved inadequate due to the oil's consistency. Additional equipment (contractor and Coast Guard) continue to arrive on scene. The weather is expected to worsen considerably over the next few days. Site assessment, lightering of vessel, and shoreline cleanup are the immediate plans, weather permitting. CASE PENDS.
