SITUATION: On Thursday, September 11, 1997, the potential for a major diesel spill occurred when the Tugboat RAY ECKSTEIN, pushing ahead six empty rock barges, caught fire. The tug, carrying 12,000 gallons of diesel, pushed the barges to left descending bank and crew abandoned the vessel with no injuries. MSD Baton Rouge responded setting booms to prevent the spread of a potential spill. The fire was extinguished preventing further damage. The tug took on water but remained stable while bilge water was pumped into containment. The tug and barges are being towed by the M/V Lady Desire and are en route to Baton Rouge. MSD Baton Rouge will conduct a follow-up investigation. CASE CLOSED.
