SITUATION: On Thursday, September 04, 1997, a medium oil spill occurred when approximately 45 barrels of crude oil was spilled into an inlet connecting to Bayou Sorrel. While pumping the crude oil into 2 storage tanks aboard a barge, the valve connecting the 2 tanks was closed. When the number one tank was filled the crude oil could not discharge into the number two tank thus overflowing the number one tank. An Oil Spill Response Company was hired, who contained the entire spill in the inlet and removed one third of the crude oil using deflection booms, a vacuum equipped boat, rope skimmer and 10 contractor personnel. MSD Baton Rouge personnel are on scene and will continue to supervise clean up operations. CASE CLOSED THIS UNIT.
