SITUATION: On Sunday, August 24, 1997, the potential for a major spill occurred when the M/V Belle of Louisville sank at its moorings in Louisville, KY. The "Belle" is a 170 foot steam propelled paddlewheeler that was build in 1914. The vessel is certified to carry 1048 passengers but no one was onboard at the time of the sinking. Divers report no signs of leaking from the tanks that contain 15,000 gallons of diesel fuel. Off-loading of the fuel has commenced and a crane barge is en route to assist with salvage operations. Media interest is high due to the historical nature of the vessel. CASE PENDS.
