SITUATION: On Wednesday, June 18, 1997, the potential for a major spill occurred when the 730 foot M/V Canadian Mariner ran hard aground due to a loss of steering in the St. Lawrence River. The vessel had a cargo of wheat and an estimated 92,000 gallons of fuel oil onboard. The forward 150 feet of the vessel is aground with the stern blocking one lane of traffic. The #1 port and starboard doubled bottom ballast tanks are flooded along with the forepeak. No pollution has been reported. Lightering and salvage plans are intended to begin on June 19th. CASE PENDS.
