SITUATION: On Tuesday, June 17, 1997, the potential for a major spill occurred when Rig Mallard 52 exploded while drilling for natural gas on Lake Chicot gas field off of the Atchalafaya River. A total of 22 crew members were onboard - 17 were evacuated, 4 are missing, and 1 is confirmed dead. The river remains open at this time and no major environmental impact is reported. A command post has been established at the Butte LaRose boat dock to asses the situation. MSO personnel, Gulf Strike Team, and the rig owner are to meet and devise plans to extinguish the rig.
