SITUATION: On Saturday, May 17, 1997, the potential for a major oil spill occurred when a leak developed in the Chelsea Terminals' Tank 204 containing 4 million gallons (90,000 bbls) of No. 6 fuel oil. The tank containment dike held the majority of the spill but 3 minor leaks in the dike did occur. The leaks were plugged to slow the discharge and prevent contamination of Boston Harbor that is located approx. 100 feet from the tank. Tank 204 contents will be transferred to Tank 202 and Tank Barge BFT-300 to prevent further discharge. Oil in the containment area has been reduced to 6-8 inches in depth. MSO Boston personnel are monitoring transfer and clean-up operations. CASE CLOSED THIS UNIT.
