SITUATION: On Friday, May 16, 1997, a major crude oil spill occurred when a 16 inch pipeline ruptured due to unknown causes near Cocodrie, LA. Texaco revised their spill estimate to 210,000 gallons(5,000bbl) of crude oil into the Lake Barre. Cenac Environmental has reported 2,495 barrels recovered to date. There are 44 vessels (barges, workboats, etc), 3,000 feet of boom and 216 personnel on scene. The focus is on cleaning up effected marsh areas and a few small islands. Hard boom will be removed and replaced with sorbent boom throughout the marsh areas. A determination on the amount of oil collected from sorbent materials will be made at a later date. Gulf Strike Team personnel have departed the scene. MSO/MSD personnel will remain on scene to monitor cleanup. Case closed this unit.
