SITUATION: On Friday, May 16, 1997, a major crude oil spill occurred when a 16 inch pipeline ruptured due to unknown causes near Cocodrie, LA. Texaco revised their spill estimate to 210,000 gallons(5,000bbl) of crude oil into the Lake Barre. Cenac Environmental has reported 2,469 barrels recovered to date. There are 9 skimmers, 39 vessels(barges, workboats, etc), 40,000 feet of boom and 252 personnel on scene. The focus is on cleaning up effected marsh areas and a few small islands. Pipeline tests have been conducted and the line has been put back into service. Flow rate has been restricted by DOT to 80 percent of MAOP. Tests are being conducted to assess damage to the oyster beds and NOAA SSC and Unified Command are meeting to discuss the soil impact on a few small islands. Gulf Strike Team personnel will be standing down. MSO/MSD personnel will remain on scene to monitor cleanup. CASE PENDS.
