SITUATION: On Friday, May 16, 1997, a medium crude oil spill occurred when a 16 inch pipeline ruptured due to unknown causes near Cocodrie, LA. The line has been shut in and the release is secured. Texaco revised their spill estimate to 105,000 gallons(2,500bbl) of crude oil into the Lake Barre. Cenac Environmental has reported 1,250 barrels recovered to date. There are 7 skimmers, 54 vessels(barges, workboats, etc), 44,200 feet of boom and 230 personnel on scene. Workers are concentrating their efforts on protecting grassy islands on the north side of the bay with containment and deflection booms. Impacts to water column, sediments, wildlife and fisheries are being monitored by NOAA, LADEQ, LADNR and several other offices. MSO personnel are on scene to assist and monitor clean-up. CASE PENDS.
