SITUATION: On Thursday, April 03, 1997, the National Response Center received a report involving the M/V DANNY SUE, pushing ahead 5 tank barges, intentionally grounded its tow to avoid a collision on the Lower Mississippi River. The T/B DC 346 loaded with 10,000 barrels of styrene was holed and another barge, the DXE 2804 carrying 28,000 barrels of pyrolysis gasoline sustained a crack in one of the tanks. The hole in the T/B 346 was shingled and no significant readings were detected during air monitoring. An estimated 1,000 gallons of styrene was released. The crack in the DXE 2804 was temporarily repaired with no product lost. Both barges will be off-loading their present cargo to have permanent repairs made. The Mississippi River was closed from MM226-228 for four hours and has been reopened to traffic. MSO New Orleans and the Gulf Strike Team continue to monitor the situation. CASE CLOSED THIS UNIT.
