SITUATION: On Wednesday, January 29, 1997, at approximately 1000 hours local time, a major crude oil spill occurred when a pipeline owned by Sun Pipeline ruptured in White Oak, Texas. EPA-OERR reports that approximately 21,000 gallons of oil spilled into Hawkins Creek. Hawkins Creek is a tributary of the Sabine River. The oil never reached the river. Sun Pipeline believes the pipeline ruptured due to internal corrosion. No wildlife impact has been noted and drinking water intakes were not affected . Sun Pipeline has assumed responsibility for the clean up and has managed to contain the oil within the creek. Vacuum trucks on scene have recovered approximately 50 % of the spill.
