SITUATION: On Wednesday, January 15, 1997, the potential for a major spill occurred when the M/V Shirley L Stapp, pushing four barges(2 gasoline, 2 diesel) ran aground near mile marker 717.2 of the Lower Mississippi River, RDB. One gas barge, S-28 sustained damage and is leaking from the #1 and #2 starboard tanks. These tanks have a combined total of 200,000 gallons on board, and the barge has a total of 1,083,197 gallons of gasoline on board. All cities downstream have been notified of the situation, and the river has been closed from MM707 to MM720. Investigators from MSO Memphis and two members of the Gulf Strike Team are on scene at this time monitoring and assessing the situation. The M/V Marine Diamond with the T/B WTC130B is en route at this time from McKellar Lake to lighter the damaged barge and Stapp Towing has provided a list of contractors names and numbers to the Gulf Strike Team.
