Kaiser's electricity was produced on-site by seven generators. As a backup,
Kaiser had a utility feed supplied by Louisiana Power and Light. The voltage was
distributed at 13,800 volts and was connected as a resistance grounded wye. The
voltage was distributed throughout the Plant by three loop feeders that
originated in the power house. Buried conduits connected the loop feeders from
the power house to five switch houses, as shown in Appendix P .
Switch House No. 1 supplied power to the digestion process. Switch House No. 2
supplied power to the evaporation and clarification processes. Switch House No.
3 supplied power to the calcination process. Switch House No. 4 supplied power
to the dock area and loading processes. Switch House No. 5 supplied power to
LaRoche Industries, which operated a chlorine processing facility adjacent to
the Plant. The switch houses further distributed the 13,800 volts to
transformers that stepped the voltage down to 2,400 and 480 volts. These
voltages were used to operate motors, pumps, and machinery in the various
processing areas.
