ACCIDENT DESCRIPTION:
The deceased was
operating a D7 cat and scraper on a project to build a
dirt access road. A DH8 cat with a ripper was ripping frozen
earth in a new roadside ditch. The ripper struck a gas line
carrying 13% H2S gas at 1000 psi, resulting in a 2.3m foot long
explosive fracture of the line. The deceased ran from his
machine downwind and collapsed and died about 45 meters from
his tractor, which was an additional 45 meters from the
break.
