| Description: On July 17, 2002 at 10:05 AM, between 10,000 and 20,000 pounds of paraffin wax were released to a drainage ditch from a tanker truck due to overfilling by the operator. The operator reportedly left the tanker unattended without securing the transfer operation. The volume of the material released is estimated to be between 1,437 and 2,875 gallons. (This estimate was calculated using the density of 48.69 pounds per square foot, which was taken from the CHRIS Manual.) When the material reached the drainage ditch, the water in the ditch solidified the paraffin and stopped the flow. The cleanup is underway, and the soil affected will be excavated. On July 19th, state representative reported that the paraffin was food grade. The spill has been secured, no material is in the creek, and clean-up continues. CASE CLOSED. |
