Description:

On July 5, 2002 at 4:00 pm (Guam time), MSO Guam discovered US Navy waste oil barge 286 partially submerged in Apra Harbor, Guam. The vessel appeared to have taken on water through two forward inspection hatches, which were improperly secured for the severe tropical weather that was affecting the island. The vessel was carrying 243,000 gallons of waste oil, of which approximately 10,000 gallons were discharged into the water. The US Navy is conducting clean-up and salvage operations with the assistance of MSO Guam. The Barge was refloated. Port of Guam opened. Water and shoreline assessment will continue and clean-up of impacted areas to be conducted as needed. CASE CLOSED.
