Description:

At 5:15 p.m. EST., on April 18, 2002, an Amtrak train derailed. An official cause has not yet been determined. The derailment took place near Palatka, FL going north to Lorton, VA. Twelve passenger cars and eighteen auto-carrier cars derailed. The train was carrying 452 people including both passengers and crew. There were four confirmed fatalities and 159 injuries. As of 23 April the track has been reopened with no report of a hazardous material release or fuel spill. CASE CLOSED
