| Description: At approximately 8:10am pacific daylight time a southbound Metrolink commuter train was struck, head-on, by a northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train. At least one passenger car from the commuter train was partially derailed. Two passengers on board the commuter train were confirmed fatalities and approximately 260 more passengers were injured. It was reported that 25 of those passengers had life threatening injuries. Several streets in the area were closed because of the wreckage. Local fire and police were on scene along with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration. The news media reported that afternoon trains and buses were used to carry passengers around the accident site. CASE CLOSED. |
