Description:

At 2:00 a.m. CST, on January 23, 2002, the Entire Recycling Plant in Nebraska City, Nebraska caught fire resulting in the release of liquefied nitrogen, burnt rubber, and toxic fumes into the air. As a result of the fire a container holding rubber products exploded injuring 11 firefighters and thirty employees were evacuated. The area around the plant has been diked off to contain the fire water and liquid rubber run-off. Local and State agencies are on scene to provide aid. Firefighters on scene are prepared to handle two other containers which they suspect may explode. EPA VII is the Federal On Scene Coordinator. CASE CLOSED.
