Description:

At 5:00 p.m. CST, on January 30, 2002, due to unknown causes, an explosion occurred at the Syntech Chemical Plant in Pasadena, Texas. Magnesium metals were burning causing magnesium oxides to be admitted into the air. There were no injuries or fatalities reported, although citizens were evacuated in a half mile radius due to the unknown toxicity of the smoke. Houston Beltway 8 was closed to all traffic until the smoke was under control. EPA VI is the Federal On Scene Coordinator. CASE CLOSED.
