Description:

At 6:30 am April 06, 2002, British Petroleum reported a tug pushing a barge struck a 24 inch distribution pipeline near Lafitte, Louisiana. The strike caused a spill of 75,600 gallons of crude oil. The pipeline was secured stopping the spill. Garner Environmental has been hired for clean-up and is en route. There was no report of any waterway closures. Marine Safety Office Morgan City , is investigating the incident.

UPDATE: A 3 inch hole in the pipeline was located and a pipeline repair team is on scene to evaluate how best to make repairs. A small amount of oil continues to seep out of the shut in line. The line connects the Loop Cloverly Facility to the refineries in Belle Chasse and Chalmette. A work around is in place enabling the affected companies to continue work to prevent a major economic impact.
