At 1153 January 12th, the National Response Center received several reports of a potential major oil spill. It was reported that the T/B SMITTY 17 was struck by the M/V ELKHORN RIVER. The Tank Barge involved was actually the T/B M&M 100, which is a 195'' double skinned barge. The T/B M&M 100 sustained a 4ft x 30 inch gash in the No: 2 starboard cargo tank, spilling 51,406 gal of No:2 Diesel. The Gulf Strike Team is responding. 6 pools of recoverable oil has been identified and skimming ops are on-going. No oiled wildlife or fish kills have been reported. L&L Environmental is the primary response contractor on scene and they have begun lightering T/B M&M 100 to the T/B SMITTY 17. CASE CLOSED THIS UNIT
