On February 4th, 1999 the motor vessel New Carissa, a 639 foot wood chip carrier, ran aground after being pushed onto the beach by inclement weather. The vessel was ballasted down and the crew removed by the Coast Guard. Salvage operations have been hampered by inclement weather. A 13 member salvage assessment team is onboard the vessel. There are a total of 396,400 gallons of fuel oil onboard. Some of the fuel tanks have leaked but the amount of material is unknown. Clean up crews are onscene. CASE PENDS.
