At approximately 1:00 AM on 19 October 1999, 100,000 gallons of JP-5 jet fuel was spilled at Naval Station Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico by Fuel Department workers transferring fuel to a daytank. The cause of the release is believed to be an unattended valve being left open at the pumping station. The spill is contained within a boomed portion of Ensenada Harbor and a drainage ditch running through a mangrove area. The Navy is using vacuum trucks and skimmers to recover the material. MSO San Juan and Gulf Strike Team personnel are on scene working with the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board as a Unified Command. Clean up operations are ongoing. CASE PENDS.
