Occurence Date: 26 February
Location: Lower Mississippi River - MM 79
Source: M/V HYDE PARK
Material: Bunker C
Severity: Medium
Quantity Discharged: 200 Barrels
Quantity in Water: 200 Barrels
Body of Water Affected: Mississippi River
Federal On-Scene Coordinator: MSO New Orleans, LA

On February 26 at 2300 the M/V Hyde Park which was tranporting 25,000 metric tons of Pyrolysis Gas collided with the Tug Herman Potts which was towing twelve loaded coke and cement barges. The M/V Hyde Park then collided with the Domino sugar docks and the 35ft crewboat Ms Leslie. The vessel estimated approximately 50 barrels of bunker C was discharged to the river. Visual estimate is 200 barrels of bunker C in the river. The initial damage survey revealed a 5x2x7 inch hole in the starboard quarter bunker tank. There is a 4 foot gash in the forepeak. The number 9 port side cargo tank sustained a 15ft lateral crack but contained no product and there is a 20 foot port side inset from cargo tanks 6 through 8 with no breach of the hull in any loaded cargo tanks. There were no injuries and the source of the spill is secured. The down river water intakes have been secured and blocked with protective booms. The M/V Hyde Park was surrounded with booms and the starboard bunker tank is being transferred to other onboard tanks. There was no pollution from the crewboat Leslie or the Tug Herman Potts. All available booms are being used to minimize the impact of the oil down river. CASE CLOSED.
